Angel Gallery is a 15th century Grade II wool merchant’s residence with a wealth of oak beams situated in the historic Market Place overlooking the Guildhall.
The Gallery, a splendid beamed area with historic arches, houses exhibitions by local and national artists.
Permanent collections are held of the work of Leslie Gibson A.R.C.A (1910 – 1969) and costume drawings form the 1930’s by Mary Wild A.R.C.A. Pottery by John Leach is also on exhibition.

The production of drawings, not merely for working purposes but as a visual record of the artist’s experience, carefully outlined in pen and ink, the surfaces freely indicated with wash laid on richer layers predominating over pen lines, are sure and sensitive. His etchings, dry points and lithographs show a fine continuity and chiaroscuro. Sketches and studies show him as observant of the most varied aspects of nature and life which are drawn with sensitivity, accuracy and freedom.

In the 1930’s he painted form London studios at Trafalgar Square, Chelsea and Camden Town. In 1940, after war service, he worked from Rydal in Westmorland, returning to London in 1945 and based his studio in Kensington. In 1950 he moved from London and established the Stapleford Studio, near Salisbury, Wiltshire, painting extensively in the West Country until his death in 1969.

LESLIE DONOVAN GIBSON
(1910 – 1969)
Leslie Donovan Gibson was born and educated in Newcastle-upon-Tyne. In 1926 he was awarded the John Christie Scholarship to Armstrong College, Durham Universioty, taking the Education Drawing Certificate in 1928, the Diploma BA in Fine Art, English and French in 1929 and the Painting Certificate in 1930. He was awarded a Royal Exhibition, studying in the School of Painting at the Royal College of Art from 1930 – 34. From 1936 – 38 he was appointed as the Board of Education Visitor to Art Schools in Germany and Italy. During the 1930’s he travelled extensively in Europe visiting and painting in France, Belgium, Spain, Finland, Sweden and Greece.
From 1930 onwards, Leslie Gibson exhibited work at the Royal Scottish Academy, the National Gallery of Canada and at many group exhibitions. The London shows include The London Group, The New English Art Club, The Mall Galleries, The Royal Academy, Senefelder Club, Victoria and Albert Museum.
